Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays very close to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in around the tenth century, and relics discovered indicate that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability since the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a much bigger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't applied until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in current times.
