Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins stumbled on in the area give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the locale almost certainly since the sixth century. The village existing at this time isn't referred to until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a much bigger area compared to the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get applied until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
