Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to 37,000 and a history going back to the times of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage found nearby offer proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability since the sixth century. The commune existing then wasn't documented till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a much wider area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be inserted up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
