Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins picked up in the area show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were inhabiting the area quite likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such was not listed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a far larger area than only the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the ensuing decades and the development of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen greater development in recent times.
