Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman times, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins found nearby offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up denote that they were residing in the vicinity possibly since the 6th Century. The village as such is not cited until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a lot greater area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name could perhaps have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put in till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the ensuing years and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town which has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
