Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins found in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts picked up show that they were settling the area most probably since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time was not mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a considerably wider area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not put in till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town that's witnessed improved development in current times.
