Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins unearthed in the area offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the local area in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not listed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a far wider area than just the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't included before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the ensuing years and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
