Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood quite likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a significantly larger area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be inserted until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
