Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up near by show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were settling the area possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a substantially bigger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding years and the building of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's seen increased development in the past few years.
