Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up near by give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were inhabiting the local area most likely since the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a lot bigger area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the following generations and the construction of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen greater development in current times.
