Located in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage picked up nearby offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place in around the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were settling the neighbourhood perhaps since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a substantially bigger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
