Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to the times of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market during the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the vicinity undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far greater area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get inserted before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
