The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a far wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the ensuing years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop.
