Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered imply that they were settling the locale most likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't reported till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way bigger area than merely the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be inserted before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following generations and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
