Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were residing in the locale almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't referred to until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a significantly wider area than just the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
