Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to Roman times, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is situated close to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were staying in the local area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time isn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a considerably wider area than simply the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has seen accelerated development in current times.
