Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it sits near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who created a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood very likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not observed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way larger area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put in prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has witnessed increased development in recent times.
