Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood most probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not cited until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far greater area compared to the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
