Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon imply that they were residing in the neighbourhood most probably from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not documented till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a much larger area than only the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the following years and the development of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's seen accelerated development in recent times.
