Located in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins picked up in the area show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the region in all probability from the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a considerably bigger area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put in before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
