Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a story stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found next to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up reveal that they were settling the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The village as it was wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a substantially bigger area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not applied prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
