Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were living in the area most likely since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far greater area than merely the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not applied before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming years and the development of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
