Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins picked up in the area give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered reveal that they were residing in the area perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a substantially bigger area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't appended up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the coming decades and the development of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
