Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past going back to the times of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins found in close proximity give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market in about the 10th Century, and relics uncovered indicate that they were settling the vicinity almost certainly since the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not observed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a significantly larger area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put on prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town which has seen accelerated development in modern times.
