Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Situated within the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage unearthed in the area give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the region more than likely since the sixth century. The commune as such was not described until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a significantly larger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be included up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
