Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage found near by give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were residing in the region in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't cited till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a way bigger area than simply the town itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not put on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the establishing of of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow.
