Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage found near by give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed denote that they were inhabiting the area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village as such isn't cited until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a substantially greater area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put in until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
