Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history harping back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon near by offer proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then was not cited till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a much wider area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the following years and the building of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
