Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the Roman period, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon denote that they were dwelling in the area very likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't described until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a considerably larger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the coming generations and the construction of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few years.
