Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the local area most likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time isn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a way greater area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be inserted prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
