The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were settling the locale more than likely from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't referred to till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far greater area than just the town alone, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
