Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins uncovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were living in the vicinity in all probability since the sixth century. The commune as such was not listed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a significantly larger area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not inserted until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve.
