Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated close to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old relics and coins picked up near by show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed indicate that they were inhabiting the local area more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't documented until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a significantly greater area compared to the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get applied prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding years and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve.
