Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were inhabiting the locale quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a far greater area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the succeeding years and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has witnessed improved development in current times.
