Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were residing in the local area perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a lot greater area than simply the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
