Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins stumbled on nearby give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the local area in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The commune as it was wasn't cited till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a far greater area than just the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not inserted prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the building of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow.
