Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the region probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a far greater area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put in before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the coming decades and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
