Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it sits next to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage stumbled on nearby offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who developed a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were staying in the area perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a significantly greater area than only the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put in up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
