Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a story extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were living in the locale in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't cited till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a far larger area than only the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
