Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed indicate that they were inhabiting the local area in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time isn't described till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a considerably wider area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the ensuing decades and the development of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
