Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Found in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past extending back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on near by show proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up indicate that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as such was not listed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially larger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not applied before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
