Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found next to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage discovered in the area give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the area very likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not described until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a considerably larger area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't appended before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the coming decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop.
