Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage found nearby offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as such was not observed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a far greater area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the following years and the building of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town which has seen greater development in recent years.
