Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up reveal that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite possibly since the sixth century. The village as it was is not mentioned until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a way wider area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name could possibly have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the coming years and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in current times.
