Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up mean that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not documented until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a considerably larger area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the following decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
