Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman period, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins discovered in the area give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were dwelling in the local area possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a substantially greater area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
