Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage uncovered near by offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The village as such was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a much greater area than only the town itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
