Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated near to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were dwelling in the local area quite likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a substantially larger area compared to the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town which has witnessed improved development in current times.
