Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a story stretching back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins found in the area give proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were settling the locale in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time was not listed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a considerably larger area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not applied until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the ensuing decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
