Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to Roman days, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits very close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled on suggest that they were settling the region probably from the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a significantly greater area than just the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the coming years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has witnessed greater development in the last few years.
