The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far greater area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
