Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins stumbled on in the area give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the vicinity almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village as such isn't observed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a far wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not put in till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
