Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were staying in the area most probably from the 6th Century. The village existing then is not reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a far bigger area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the ensuing years and the development of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
