Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins picked up near by show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not observed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a considerably greater area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put in till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the ensuing generations and the construction of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand.
