Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up nearby give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far bigger area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't appended up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
