Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed in the area give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed indicate that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely since the sixth century. The village existing at this time isn't referred to till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a far bigger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
