Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed near the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins found in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were settling the locale almost certainly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then isn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a lot wider area than merely the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not inserted until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
