Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage found near by offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were settling the region quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time wasn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a way wider area than only the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put in till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
