Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't reported till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a considerably bigger area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town that has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
