Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon imply that they were settling the locale quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't referred to until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a much wider area than just the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
