Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found near the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins picked up in the area show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were settling the local area quite possibly since the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a far greater area than just the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be inserted prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the coming years and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed improved development in modern times.
