Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a past extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage stumbled on in the area show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the region most likely from the sixth century. The commune existing then is not documented till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a lot bigger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the succeeding generations and the building of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
