Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were settling the vicinity perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a significantly wider area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be appended until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the coming generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that has seen increased development in the recent past.
