Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the era of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity give proof of this. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the region more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a far larger area than just the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
