Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage found near by show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed imply that they were residing in the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a much wider area than just the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's witnessed greater development in the past several years.
