Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered denote that they were residing in the vicinity probably from the sixth century. The village existing then isn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a considerably larger area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't applied before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
