Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were settling the area in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a significantly wider area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be included up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the following generations and the development of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
