Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered mean that they were residing in the region most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a lot larger area than simply the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
