Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the days of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the area in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not reported until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a significantly greater area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town that has witnessed greater development in recent times.
