Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market during the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were residing in the area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village existing then isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a much bigger area than simply the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
