Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated close to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic relics and coins picked up nearby offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity most probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not cited till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a lot greater area than simply the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
