Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman times, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies next to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage stumbled on in the area give proof of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were dwelling in the local area quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as such isn't reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way wider area than simply the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be appended until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the coming generations and the development of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
