Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage stumbled on in the area give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the area probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a considerably bigger area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be inserted before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the following years and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
