Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins uncovered nearby show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were residing in the locale more than likely since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time was not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a substantially larger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed increased development in the recent past.
