Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins found nearby give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were living in the area probably since the sixth century. The commune existing then isn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a substantially greater area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the coming decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen improved development in the recent past.
