Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is placed very close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time isn't documented until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a much larger area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
