Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins found nearby show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics found suggest that they were residing in the region quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a substantially greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town which has witnessed improved development in recent years.
