Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found near to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed denote that they were settling the locale perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a significantly bigger area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that's witnessed increased development in the past few years.
