Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins uncovered near by offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were living in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a considerably wider area than simply the town alone, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be included before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has witnessed increased development in recent times.
