Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to Roman times, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits very close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage picked up nearby show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the area in all probability since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time was not documented until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a far wider area than merely the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not appended till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the ensuing years and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen increased development in current times.
