The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were dwelling in the area most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't referred to till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a significantly wider area than only the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the construction of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
