Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage discovered near by show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were settling the vicinity in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a far larger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop.
