Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman times, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it can be found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were residing in the local area probably since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't discussed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a substantially wider area than just the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town which has witnessed increased development in recent times.
