Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the era of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage unearthed in the area give proof of this. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the locale in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't remarked upon till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a much wider area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that has seen increased development in recent years.
