Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to Roman days, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage stumbled on in the area give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not documented until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far greater area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
