Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins uncovered near by show proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were dwelling in the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not mentioned till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a far greater area than merely the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
