Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the era of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities found mean that they were settling the region most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a lot greater area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the succeeding years and the construction of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
