Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it can be found near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins discovered nearby give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were staying in the local area most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a substantially larger area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put in before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following years and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen increased development in recent times.
