Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past going back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins stumbled upon nearby show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up denote that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a much bigger area than merely the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the ensuing decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's seen greater development in recent years.
