Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story going back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered reveal that they were settling the vicinity in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't reported until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a significantly greater area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing generations and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
