Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who developed the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered mean that they were settling the locale undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The commune existing then wasn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a substantially larger area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be appended till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following years and the building of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
