Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to the era of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were settling the local area in all likelihood since the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not observed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a substantially greater area than just the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the following years and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
