Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is found close to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were settling the region more than likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing then wasn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a far bigger area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
